Trials seeks surfers
Registration is ongoing for the Quiksilver-Big Island Toyota Pro-am Surfing Trials.
The 29th annual Honolii Beach Park professional surfing contest qualifier is open to Big Island residents and will begin its wave holding period on June 1 and continue until Sept. 28. The surfing divisions are men’s open, women’s open, open longboard (9 feet and over), and open bodyboard.
Entry deadline is May 31 and the fee is $60, which includes a T-shirt. Late entries will be charged an additional $10 dollars with no double entries and no refunds if a contestant misses a heat.
Over $3,000 in prizes will be awarded, including 10 round trips from the Big Island to Oahu, entry fees to professional surfing events on the North Shore of Oahu and surf gear.
When the holding period starts, contestants should call Orchid Land Surfboards on Friday mornings to check for green-light weekend surf conditions.

High High bowling
sign-ups ongoing
Hilo High bowling coach Damien Chow is taking sign-ups for students who wish to be part of the bowling team next school year.
Registration is ongoing through May 31 at the school’s main office and at athletic director Sondra Lundvick’s office.
Students also can pick up physical forms and as well as other necessary paperwork (student participation; parent/guardian consent release; and assumption of risk), all of which must be turned in to Chow on the day of tryouts, which will be announced at a later date.

Honokaa accepting
basketball applicants
Honokaa High School is accepting applications for varsity head coaching positions for boys and girls basketball.
Applications are available at the main office from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The deadline to apply is April 27. Applications can be turned into the main office or the AD’s office, which is located in the gym.
Hawaii takes third
in state AJA play
The Big Island All-Stars finished third at the state AJA baseball championships earlier in the month on Oahu.
In a 16-6 victory over Kauai in the consolation game, Alton Penrose was 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Thad Estrada and Shannon Camero also had three hits each. Kean Wong and Shaye Miura were both 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Onan Masaoka struck out eight to pick up the victory.
In the semifinals, Maui scored seven unearned runs in the first inning and beat Hawaii 13-6.
Miura clubbed a solo home run and finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Estrada was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Hurt by two errors on the first inning, Aaron Correa was the losing pitcher.
Oahu outslugged Maui 20-15 in the championship game.
Go-kart club holding
racing on Saturday
The Orchid Island Ohana Kart Club will hold a points race on Saturday at Hilo Raceway, with gates opening at 8 a.m. and racing from 10:15 a.m.-3 p.m.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., a drivers’ meeting follows at 9:15 a.m. and practice goes on until 10 a.m.

Academic honors for
Waiakea swimmers
The Waiakea High girls swimming team earned an All-American Scholar Team Award from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association for the third consecutive year.
The Lady Warriors, who took second at the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championships, compiled an average GPA of 3.53.
Also, led 4.0 students Chris Hu and Madisyn Uekawa, five Waiakea swimmers made Academic All-American, including Jillian Hughes (3.9), Akemi King (3.9) and Kirsten Nakamura (3.8).
Hilo youngster wins
junior event on Maui
Hilo’s Pono Yanagi won a Hawaii State Junior Golf Association tournament on Sunday at Pukalani Country Club in Maui.
Yanagi finished strong with 2-under 70 in the boys 11-12 division, pocketing a four-shot victory in the junior tour series at 6-over 150.
Hilo’s Kaley Ann Saludares was runner-up in girls 13-14; Hilo’s Lacey Uchida was third in girls 7-10; and Hilo’s Kaelyn Uchida and Mari Ebersole were fourth and sixth, respectively, in girls 11-12.
Speed clinic
on tap in June
Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 6 and 7.
The clinic will begin at 10 a.m. both days, with clinic-day registration at 9 a.m. June 6.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days. Runners who register before May 10 receive a $10 discount.
